Breast Surgery Rehabilitation

Many people suffer from restricted and/or painful shoulder and neck problems following surgery to the breast. This is particularly common on those who have had breast cancer, but may follow any surgery to the chest area.

The problem may not be of relative importance at the time of the surgery and subsequent treatment, but as the immediacy and worry of the original problems fade, the restricted movements of the shoulder or neck may become increasingly troublesome or frustrating.

Both surgery and radiotherapy cause damage to connective tissue. Connective tissue is continuous between the chest shoulder and neck regions, covering and lying between muscles, attaching on to the coverings of bones, and being the link between the skin and the rest of the underlying tissues.

Following careful assessment of the injured tissue, gentle specific and specialised treatment to the affected areas, can produce a marked increase in range of movement and reduction in symptoms even many years after the original problem.

Treatment can begin immediately post surgery and prior to radiotherapy, but should not be carried out during a course of radiotherapy.

Treatment can still be effective many years after surgery.
