Our physiotherapists have many years’ experience working in NHS and private hospitals as well as in the community and work closely with Consultants, primary healthcare providers, patients and their families to ensure complete continuity of treatment.
Neurological physiotherapy involves the treatment of people with movement and function disorders that have originated from problems within the body’s nervous and neuromuscular system.
These conditions often manifest themselves as muscle weakness, poor balance and coordination, uncontrolled muscle spasm and tremors, loss of function and decreased sensation. Common neurological conditions include amongst others:
Functional Neurological Disorders, Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury, Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease.
Introducing Maria Garcia, Neuro Physiotherapist
Maria is a highly-regarded Chartered Physiotherapist with 15 years’ experience. She has specialised in neurological rehabilitation and rehabilitation of the older person for over ten years and has recently worked as Team Leader at a specialist neuro-rehabilitation centre.
Having previously worked at the prestigious King’ College Hospital in London and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Maria gained considerable experience working in many neuro-specialties, including neurosurgery, neuro-medicine, stroke recovery, neuro-rehabilitation, neuro outpatients, spasticity services, wheelchair services and community rehabilitation.
Maria has extensive experience in managing a wide range of complex neurological conditions, working with patients with long term neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Stroke, spinal cord injuries (SCI) and traumatic brain injury (TBI), both within the NHS and private practice. She also has specialist skills in the management of clinical presentations including vestibular disorders, facial weakness and dystonia.
Alongside her neurology experience, Maria also has considerable experience in the assessment, treatment and management of the older person, including general mobility, falls prevention and community access.
Her experience working in multi-disciplinary rehabilitation centres enables Maria to effectively communicate and liaise with relatives, carers, Continuing Health Care teams, Commissioning Groups and Social Services to provide a comprehensive rehabilitation service to patients.
Maria is based at our rehabilitation clinic in Guildford but is also available for appointments in Godalming and for home or nursing home visits around Guildford, Godalming and the villages.
During her spare time, Maria enjoys running, having previously run the London Marathon twice, but now just concentrating on half marathons.
